It makes me sad that so much of General Chemistry relies on the sense of smell.
I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m one of those people that are “odor blind” to certain scents. This is more of a hindrance than one might initially expect, especially in the field of chemistry.
I can’t smell ammonia unless it is highly concentrated - enough to give me a headache. I can barely smell hydrogen sulfide in any concentration. I can’t for the life of me detect any sort of organic compounds. I once did a whole organic chemistry synthesis lab completely in the dark because I have no idea if a solution smells like bananas or apples or musk or god knows what else.
The worst part is I’ve gotten more than a few points off labs for incorrectly identifying odors. It’s not my fault. :(
A cop pulls over Erwin Schrödinger and asks him to open his trunk.
The cop comes back and says, “Sir, do you know there’s a dead cat in there?”
Schrödinger says, “I do now.”
